Reiki

A method of healing which brings balance to both mind and emotions
helping to promote a calmer response to life’s challenges

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing and relieves suffering. The method was developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. It is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and through all living things and is what causes us to be alive.

If our “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to feel stress or become ill, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace and balance to both mind and emotions.

This energy has been known by many different names through different cultures through ancient times to the present including ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India. The free-flow of this energy in a person is also the basis of Acupuncture, T’ai chi and Yoga.

What are the benefits?

Reiki has been effective in helping virtually every known illness, which can be a time of great stress. It can help us cope by encouraging relaxation, by promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well-being on all levels. It encourages and supports positive personal choices, such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure activities, and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco.

Reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, i.e. in any situation. Being complementary, Reiki works effectively alongside orthodox healthcare and other natural remedies.

What happens during a session?

A session is usually carried out with the recipient lying down or sitting. The therapist places their hands gently on or over the body. No pressure is applied and no massage or manipulation is involved. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes easily through all materials, including plaster casts. Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all.

Do I need to do anything after a session?

As Reiki is deeply relaxing and can have a profoundly calming effect, it is a good idea to rest for a while afterwards if possible and drink plenty of water. The beneficial effects from a treatment may be felt for several days. As part of the normal healing process, you may feel rising emotions and on occasions physical symptoms may feel worse but this is only temporary.

How often do I need to have a treatment?

A single Reiki session can make a difference; however, a course of regular treatments may be more effective as it helps promote a calmer response to life’s challenges. These may be weekly, fortnightly or less, depending on the needs of the individual.

How does it work alongside conventional medicine?

Reiki does not take the place of conventional medicine. It works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. You may like to know that Reiki is becoming far more mainstream and is now being used in a variety of settings including GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres, and in the care of the elderly.

Is Reiki connected to any religion?

While Reiki is not religious, it is practiced by people of all religious persuasions as well as those with no religious convictions.
